International trains linked Helsinki with St Petersburg, with the Allegro service introduced in December 2010 to shorten the cross-border journey considerably. Its seven-car Sm6 tilting trains were manufactured by Alstom in Italy for speeds of up to 220 km/h, and border and customs checks took place aboard moving trains. Allegro's international operation ended in March 2022; VR subsequently announced plans to reuse the trainsets on Finnish domestic long-distance services.
