255系は、251系に次ぐリゾート特急として1993年に登場しました。車体は253系に似たデザインで、車体断面を大きく取っています。走行装置には、特急型で初めてのインバータ制御です。京葉線・総武線の東京駅から、房総方面に向かう、「さざなみ」「わかしお」に使用されています。
Series 255 was introduced in 1993 as a resort limited express following Series 251. Its body design resembles Series 253, with a generous cross-section. Its traction equipment was the first to use inverter control in a limited express train. It is used on Sazanami and Wakashio services from Tokyo Station on the Keiyo and Sobu Lines to the Boso area.
