E231系の近郊形は2000年から宇都宮線・高崎線へ投入され、のちに東海道線にも広がりました。一部の車両にクロスシートやトイレを備え、10両の基本編成には2004年から2階建てグリーン車2両が加わりました。
The suburban version of JR East Series E231 was introduced on the Utsunomiya and Takasaki Lines from 2000 and later on the Tokaido Line. Some cars have transverse seating and toilets; two double-deck Green Cars were added to the ten-car main sets from 2004.
