中央・総武線の各駅停車は、南北を結ぶ京浜東北線と同様に生い立ちの異なる2線が直通運転をしています。1923年に開通した高架線は山手線・京浜東北線を跨ぎ越す立派なものです。歴史的に車種が統一されたことがあまり無く、かつては101系、103系、205系が混用されていました。現在では209系500番台とE231系0番台が混用されています。中央快速線にE233系が導入されたため、中央線区間でもステンレス車の競演が見られるようになりました。
