Enoden is a valuable example of the transition from tramway to urban railway in Japan. All its trains are small articulated units with two doors per car, and units can be coupled to run as four-car trains. There is also a street-running section near Enoshima. The Series 1000 family played a major role in modernising Enoden. All have a single-piece front window, but their drive systems and headlight shapes differ. Series 1000 was built with nose-suspended motors and without air conditioning, which was added later. Series 1100 is almost identical to Series 1000. Series 1200 was Enoden's first group delivered with air conditioning, and its headlight housings have a slightly different shape. Series 1500 was the first group with cardan drive. The Series 1000 family originally wore a pale cream and light-green livery, but repainting has recently progressed into the scheme first used on Series 20, which adds gold decorative stripes to the pre-Series 1000 livery.
