The Oslo Metro, or T-bane, is divided into eastern and western parts at Majorstuen. The western side was built with overhead wires, and there was no through running between the two sides until 1995. In 1995, through services began using trains able to switch between third-rail and overhead-wire power. Subsequently, the Osterås–Majorstuen section of Line 2 was converted from overhead wires to third rail, and sections of Lines 1 and 4 were also relocated. Some sections still have both third-rail and overhead electrification. T-bane Line 1 is Oslo's oldest underground railway. Its western section, Frognerseteren–Majorstuen, originally opened as a private railway built to tram standards. Even after through running with the metro began, the alignment remained unchanged, with mountain-railway-like climbs and descents and beautiful views. For railway enthusiasts, the change between third-rail shoes and pantograph at Froen is particularly enjoyable. It takes about 20 seconds and is remarkably smooth. The trains used are Series 1300 and 2000. Series 1300 is based on Series 1000/1100 with a pantograph, but has a full-width cab and slightly different door positions. Series 2000 is a new inverter-controlled train introduced from 1994, with a body width of 3300 mm and an unusual seating layout.
