Oslo's SL79 was ordered in 1979 and introduced in two batches during 1982–1984 and 1989–1990. Duewag built the first ten trams in Germany, while Strømmen built the remainder in Norway, introducing thyristor control as part of the tramway's modernisation. These unidirectional, high-floor articulated vehicles had doors on the right and six axles, with powered bogies at the ends and an unpowered central bogie supporting the articulation.
