ロッテルダムのメトロは1968年に開業したオランダ初の地下鉄で、市中心部の地下区間から郊外の地上区間へ路線を広げました。通常のメトロ区間は第三軌条で集電しますが、東部の快速トラム区間では踏切を通るため架線を使い、対応する電車は走行中にパンタグラフを上げて集電方式を切り替えます。地下鉄と郊外鉄道の性格を組み合わせ、デン・ハーグやホーク・ファン・ホラント方面にもつながる都市圏の輸送網へ発展しました。
Rotterdam opened the Netherlands' first metro in 1968, extending from underground city-centre routes into surface suburban corridors. Conventional metro sections use third-rail power, while eastern sneltram branches with level crossings use overhead wires; compatible trains raise their pantographs in motion when changing power systems. Combining metro and suburban-rail characteristics, the network subsequently expanded towards The Hague and Hoek van Holland, providing links beyond the central municipality.
