Series 815 run Kumamoto area in Kagoshima line and Hohi Line since 1999. It adopted Hitachi's A-Train design, with which most of the interior components are devided into large modules, jointed with large bolts to the body. Although its seat arrangement is normal side-seat, its design is very unique.815系は、813 系に続く地方向け通勤車として 1999 年に登場しました。日立製作所の A-Train と呼ばれる設計手法が取り入れられ、内装の大部分はブロック化されたモジュールをボルト止めしています。運転台やトイレもモジュール化されており、運転台後部の仕切りも簡素な構造です。座席はオールロングシートです。熊本地区の鹿児島本線および、豊肥本線で活躍しています。その後の増備は817系に移行しました。
