The Wadamisaki Line, running from Hyogo to Wadamisaki, is a commuter route serving factories including Mitsubishi Heavy Industries. Until electrification in 2001, KiHa 35-300 diesel cars were used. The KiHa 35, built as a commuter diesel train, suited the line well, but was withdrawn following electrification. These cars were dedicated to the Wadamisaki Line: all but one passenger doorway on one side were closed off, and the number of engines was halved to one per two cars, producing the KiHa 35-300 and KiKuHa 35-300 types. The photographs were taken around 1998.
