JR西日本681系は1992年に先行試作車が製造され、1995年から量産車が登場した交直流特急電車です。非貫通の流線形先頭車と連結用の貫通形先頭車を組み合わせ、大阪と北陸を結ぶ「サンダーバード」などに使われました。VVVFインバータ制御を採用し、国鉄485系を置き換える高速特急として開発されました。

VVVF inverter control supported its development as a faster replacement for JNR Series 485.
