103系は本来長編成の通勤電車用として設計されましたが、加古川線では貫通式の運転台を取り付けた103系3550番台として2連で運用されています。103系の電動車は二両ユニットの設計なのて、2M編成となり、高い加速度を持ちます。トイレが設置されているほか、一部の車両は横尾忠則による奇抜なデザインが施されています。
Series 103 was originally designed as a commuter train for long formations, but on the Kakogawa Line it operates in two-car formations as the 3550 subseries, fitted with front gangway doors in the driving cabs. Since Series 103 motor cars were designed as two-car units, both cars are powered, giving these trains high acceleration. Toilets have also been installed, and some cars carry striking designs by Tadanori Yokoo.
