Every Shinkansen departing from the Tokyo metropolitan area starts from Tokyo Station. Although Shinjuku Station has more daily passengers, Tokyo Station plays a major role as the gateway for long-distance travellers leaving Tokyo. When first built in 1914, the Marunouchi station building had a Renaissance style with round domes, but the domes were lost in the air raids of World War II. After the war, the building was repaired in the 1940s with a simplified flat roof. Today the building is surrounded by skyscrapers, but it is recognised as an important piece of architectural heritage. In 2012, the Marunouchi building was preserved and restored, including the reconstruction of the original north and south domes.
