英国伝承童謡に
The man in the moon
Came down too soon,
And asked his way to Norwich;
He went by the south,
And burnt his mouth
With supping cold plum porridge.
というのがある。
地名のノリッジと、お粥のポリッジ、その他、韻を踏んでいるので調子がいいが、
「冷たいお粥でやけどした」という意味不明な不思議な詩だ。
ファージョンの「銀のシギ」は、この詩と、昔話とから想像をふくらませて生まれた。「月の男」チャーリーが、最後にすばらしく変身するのに驚かされる。
