253系は1991年の成田エクスプレス運転開始に合わせて登場し、成田空港と東京圏の主要駅を結びました。3両・6両単位を組み合わせて最大12両で運転する構成で、2010年に成田エクスプレスでの運用を終えました。
JR East Series 253 was introduced with the Narita Express in 1991, linking Narita Airport with major stations in the Tokyo area. Three-car and six-car units could combine into trains of up to twelve cars; the type left Narita Express service in 2010.
