185系は、1981年に登場した国鉄最後の特急形電車です。特急「踊り子」用として0番台が、「新幹線リレー号」用として200番台が、あわせて227両製造されました。片開きドアに開閉式の窓など、急行形に準じた設備を持ちます。内装はリクライニングシートに交換され、各線の特急・湘南ライナーとして活躍しています。
Series 185, introduced in 1981, was JNR's last limited express train design. A total of 227 cars were built: the 0 subseries for Odoriko and the 200 subseries for the Shinkansen Relay service. Single-leaf doors and opening windows give it equipment closer to an express train. The interiors were fitted with replacement reclining seats, and the trains serve limited expresses on various lines and Shonan Liner services.
