In Tokyo area, elevated railway are very useful to move around. Nowadays these lines are operated by JR, but in the past a govermental agency managed them. Shosen (Sho : agency, Sen : line) was the most popular name for these lines. At that time, elevated railways were not so common except for in a huge city like London, Paris and New York. The stations of these old lines (Yamanote-line Keihintohoku-line, Chuou line and Sobu line) are characterized by curvy design and heavy iron frame.山手線・京浜東北線・中央線などのJR線は、戦前には鉄道省という政府省庁が運営していて、省線と呼ばれていました。東京都心部の路線網の多くは戦前に原型が形作られていて、ホームの構造に昭和モダニズムを感じることが出来ます。当時高架鉄道網が整備されていたのはロンドン・パリ・ニューヨークなどごくわずかでした。このような建築物を楽しむことができるのは、主に山手線・京浜東北線・中央線・総武線です。
