1997年に登場した780形はインバータ制御を持ち、3連まで連結して運用されました。赤・クリーム・グリーンの新塗装は、770系にも広がりました。780形の登場で、揖斐線全列車が新岐阜まで直通するようになりました。活躍期間は2005年の廃線までの8年間と短期間でしたが、現在も豊橋鉄道で見ることが出来ます。
Type 780, introduced in 1997, had inverter control and could operate in formations of up to three cars. Its new red, cream, and green livery was also applied to Type 770. With the introduction of Type 780, all Ibi Line trains began running through to Shin-Gifu. Its eight years of service there ended with the line's closure in 2005, but the cars can still be seen on Toyohashi Railway.
