Dannish Trains

DSB (Dannish Railway)

Some of Dannish (DSB's) trains give us great impact, since their design is very unique. However, these designs are lead from practical reasons. Nowadays, tube-like diesel cars (IC3) are exporeted to many countries, and short-body-united commutor trains are being introduced in Stockholm and Tokyo.
Twenty years ago, Dannish train network was splitted by many inner seas, and sometimes boats carried trains. A long express trains needed to be splited to fit into the boat, so they needed to have a pass-way door at the cabin. A unique design was developed to fulfill this requirement, and it has turned out to be a great success.

DSB DMU MF/IC3

DSB DMU MF/IC3

IC3 (DMU MF) is the major express stock in Denmark. It has a large front door, covered with rubber. Three cars compose a transet, and 1-3 trainsets run together. It can also be merged with EMU ER for IC/IC lyn services. Its interior is luxurous, with sofa-like seats and indirect lights.

DSB EMU ER

DSB EMU ER

Series ER can be often seen around Copenhagen. Based on IC3, its body layout is changed for shorter traffic. It has more doors, simpler seats than IC3, longer transet (4 cars) and space for bicycles. The series are mainly used in short distance rapid services (IR).

ET EMU are used in Öresund line, connecting Copenhagen (Denmark) and Malmö (Sweden). While both DSB and SJ own these trainsets, the design is mostly Dannish style, similar to IC3. Most services are from Helsingor to Malmö but some reaches Göteborg.

DSB DMU ML (Lynette)

DSB DMU ML (Lynette)

The older Dannish DMU is NL, called Lynette. It was made by Daimler-Benz. These series are owned not only by DSB, but also other small train companies. They form trainsets like ML-ML, ML-FL-ML, ML-FL-FL-ML. They run streetway near Helsingør.

Hornbækbanen

Hornbækbanen

Hornbækbanen runs streetway from Helsingør to Grønnehave.

DSB DMU MR

DSB DMU MR

Series MR has been built from 1978. They are served for local traffic in all the area in Denmark, since DSB does not have EMUs for local traffic. Max. speed is 140km/h. Its front mask is similar to series MC. As IC3 has converted to local services, these series are going to be withdrawn.

DSB DMU MQ

DSB DMU MQ

MQ is made by Siemens in Germany, being similar to DB BR642. It has a special boggie which does not have an axis, enabling low floor in the middle part. It is also equipped with large windows, making the interior is very spacious.

S-tåg: Urban train in Copenhagen

The major transport in Copenhagen is urban trains called S-tåg (pronounced like "es tow"). It has a regular timetable, and runs every 10 minutes. Rolling stocks are called like "Nth generation".

S-tåg 2G

S-tåg 2G

Second generation stocks (MM-FU-MU-FS) have been in service since 1967. They have dark red steal body with nose-suspension drive. At first, it had a rounded front window, but it was changed to flat glass at the renovation. In 2006, these series are being withdrwan.

S-tåg 3G (FC-MC)

New prototype cars (3rd generation) were introduced at 1979 to prepare for the extension. After some testing, 48 cars were adopted, but the 2nd generation type still stayed at its position. The 3rd generation vehicles are characterized by cardin suspension and non-wooden interior.

S-tåg 4G (SA)

S-tåg 4G (SA)

Fourth generation units have the most interesting structure among every commuter train in the world, since its length is only 8m and only have one axis in one car. Because of these tricks, it has achieved wide interior -- 3.5m. Four or 8 units form a trainset.

Copenhagen Metro

Metro in copenhagen opened in 2002, the newest in Scandinavian countries. S-tåg network was considered to be enough, but it did not have lines in the downtown. The Metro connects the city center and major stations. Trains are controlled automatically, and no conductors are in the trains.

Metro Stock

Metro Stock

Metro stocks are made by Ansaldobreda in Italy. Each car has 13m body with two doors, and 3 cars form one trainset. In 2007, 34 trainsets are in service. Its outfit and interior are white-based, looks simple and clean. They do not have cabins, but equipped with ATO system.

Metro Stations

Metro Stations

Copenhagen Metro are designed with much consideration of environment. Stations are located in a higher position, in order to help train's acceration with gravity. Light is coming from pyramid shape window to the undergraound station. Platform are sealed with screen doors, for enclosing warm air.
